_____How to install Palettes
To install new palettes that you have downloaded, there are two possibilities. First, unzip the downloaded zip file; Palettes can be imported one by one, only *.pal files.

  • from the Styles/Palette Manager menu: the Palette Repository Browser window will open. Click Import and select the palette you want to import. Click OK. A short message will confirm you that the Palette has been installed and imported correctly.

  • Apply a style which has the Palette property exported (like Building Blocks/Simple Styles/Simple Watercolor) and open the Palette Editor by clicking the small edit icon next to the palette colors. The Palette Editor appears. Click the Import button below the Palettes list and select the palette(s) from your computer folder and click OK. A short message will confirm you that the Palette has been installed and imported correctly.

_____How to apply an existing palette

Select a palette from the list and double-click it. The palette colors will be immediately updated in the Palette Editor window. If you are satisfied, click OK and the palette will be applied to your image and updated in the Properties+Preview pane. If not, choose another palette until you have found the one that best fits your needs.

_____How to create a new palette

Open the Palette Manager. You can decide to delete all the colors, or change them. Select the type of palette you want to create: Harmony-based or Custom. Here we will select a Harmony-based: you have seven options, they all give different results by combining the colors in different ways.

  • TRIAD: the palette is composed of three colors that are spaced at an equal distance apart on the color wheel, such as red, yellow & blue; orange, green & purple; yellow-green, purple-blue & red-orange, etc...
  • COMPLEMENTARY: the palette is composed of colors that are directly opposite to each other on the color wheel, such as yellow & purple, red & green, blue & orange.
  • SHADES: by default, PostworkShop uses 5 colors; in the Shades palette type, once selected the main color, PWS will ad 4 shades of the same tone to create the palette.
  • ANALOGOUS: the palette is composed of colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel. Some examples are green, yellow green, and yellow or red, orange and yellow.
  • MONOCHROMATIC: the palette is composed of colors of one color family in various values of intensities. Very effective in imparting subtle nuance.
  • COMPOUND: the palette's colors create a right angle and the color in the middle is on the bisector.

In our exemple we will select the Shades palette type and select green as main color.

_____How to add a color to the palette/How to modify a color

Select with a double-click a palette from the Palettes list or create a new one, then click Add new color. A black square will appear in your palette. You can set the color you want by moving the RGB sliders, inserting manually the RGBA values (figure a), the HSLA values (figure b) or the HEX code (figure c) or simply moving the small color picker in the color wheel. The new color will be automatically updated as you move the sliders or the picker. If you want to modify any color, simply select it and change the value as said before.

To extract a palette from an image you have on your computer, click the Extract from image button and select the file you want to extract the colors from.: its thumbnail will appear on the left side. By default, 5 colors will be extracted with the Palette method 1.

You can decide to extract from 1 to 20 colors from an image with 4 different palette methods.

Also you can choose to sort the colors by Luminosity, by Hue or leave them unsorted. Here we choose to extract 10 colors with Palette method 2 and leave the colors Unsorted.

_____How to save a Palette

Once you decided the Number of colors and the Palette method you prefer, click Ok. The palette will be refreshed and the new one will be displayed (see above). Be careful when saving a new palette not to overwrite the preexisting one (Autumn_Red_Leaves in our case). Click Save As and add the new palette a name then click Ok.

Your new palette will be inserted in the Palettes' list which is alphabetical and the name will be displayed on the top.

You can also export a palette to share it with others. Click Export and save your file. In this case pay attention to the name of the *.PAL file to export which has to look like : palette_NAME.pal
More palettes can be downloaded from our downloads section.
